How Much Flatware Do We Need to Meet?
Because we meet by appointment, please have at least a service for 8 or a large mixed lot. In general, we need around 50 troy ounces of silver to make a trip worthwhile. The average sterling fork or spoon weighs about one ounce, and knives count for much less because their blades are stainless and their handles are often weighted.
Patterns That Earn More
We try to beat any legitimate offer and pay extra for high-quality makers such as Tiffany & Co., Christofle, Reed & Barton, Wallace Silversmiths, and Tuttle patterns including Hannah Hull, Onslow, and the 46-piece Triumph service.
Silver Plate Is Different
Flatware marked IS, EPNS, Community, Rogers, or Silverplate is plated, not sterling, and has very little metal value. We cannot buy it, but we are happy to confirm what you have from a photo.
What We Pay
Cook County Buyers pays on a sliding scale based on the type and resale potential of the silver:
- Sterling flatware: minimum 65% of melt/spot value (reflecting refining costs).
- Coins and bars (.999 or recognized pure silver): up to 90% of market value.
- Designer silver jewelry or vintage Navajo jewelry: can be substantially higher, often well above 100% of melt value, priced on current resale/collector demand rather than metal content alone.
